For best results read instructions carefully before starting. Melted wax can cause burns. Wax is flammable (flash point is about 108°C). Adult supervision recommended.

What You Need

Ingredients: Wax, Stearine, Colour, optional Fragrance (wax compatible)

Tools: Mould (commercial or Milk Carton, Can, Pipe, etc) Funnel, Thermometer, Masking Tape, Clamps (strong bulldog/foldback clips if possible, or as a substitute, clothes pegs)

  Prepare Mould (commercial 2-piece only)
1. CUT mould into two halves. TRIM excess material off. Leave about 10mm around edge of mould and around Locator Pins/Holes. (CAUTION: do not cut off the Locators, these align the mould.)
  2. CUT a fill hole in bottom of mould, big enough for a small funnel.

3. TIE a knot in the WICK (needs to be untied later). PLACE wick between the two mould halves with the knot on the outside of mould. (The knot is to stop leaking. Blu-Tac on top of knot helps.) CLAMP wick tight with a clip or clothes peg.

  4. CLAMP mould tight with clips or pegs. SEAL edges with masking tape.

5. PLACE mould in a box of wet sand or similar.

  Melt Wax

  1. HEAT wax to 70°C or until it melts, over a slow heat in a saucepan or double boiler. (Do not over heat: wax will ignite at 108°C, and excessive heat may damage mould). Small chunks or granules melt faster.

  2. MIX in stearine (prevents wax from sticking to mould). The ratio is: 90% wax (by weight) to 10% stearine.

  3. ADD colour. Colour is strong. About 250g will colour 25kg of wax! Add about 1.5ml of fragrance per kg of wax, and mix well.

  Mould Candle

  1. POUR hot water into mould, drain and dry (prepares mould for hot wax).

  2. POUR melted wax into mould. Pour slowly to avoid air bubbles. As wax sets it may shrink. There may be a depression down the centre of the candle. (If depression is not visible, use a metal skewer or similar to break through the crust.) Pour in more melted wax to top up.

  Remove from Mould

  1. When the wax has completely set, REMOVE from mould.

  2. SMOOTH the moulding seam with a knife.

  3. UNTIE knot in wick. TRIM excess wick at base.

  4. FLATTEN candle base by TRIMMING or MELTING SLIGHTLY against a warm, flat SURFACE.
